About the funder

The Dr. Buhmann Foundation for Interreligious Understanding was established in 2002 in Hanover on the initiative of Dr. Christian Buhmann. Originally, its focus was on promoting understanding between Christians and Muslims. Since 2011, it has expanded its commitment to intercultural and interreligious dialogue among people of different backgrounds and religions. The non-profit foundation supports projects, seminars, encounter events, and the development of teaching materials to promote peaceful coexistence in Northwest Germany and beyond. The foundation is managed by individuals from various denominations and professional fields in the board and advisory council, who carry out their work independently of state or religious institutions.

Mission & Vision

"Love your neighbor as yourself" (Bible) and the call to charity in the Quran form the foundation of our work. Our goal is to promote interreligious understanding and peaceful coexistence among people of different religions and cultures. We support educational events, encounter formats, and teaching programs to reduce prejudices, strengthen tolerance, and make shared values tangible.

Target groups

The funding opportunities of the Dr. Buhmann Foundation are aimed at initiatives, associations, and project sponsors that promote interreligious and intercultural understanding. This includes, in particular, school projects as well as teachers and educators for interreligious education, youth and community groups from Christian, Muslim, and other religious communities, social institutions and educational providers in Northwest Germany, as well as organizers of encounter formats (e.g., Long Night of Encounter).
