Dr.-Gregorius-Mättig-Stiftung
About the funder
The Dr. Gregorius Mättig Foundation is a non-legal citizen foundation held in trust by the Bürgerstiftung Dresden. It was established on September 25, 2007, by descendants of Gregorius Mättig to continue the charitable foundations founded in the 17th century by the Bautzen physician and patron Dr. Gregorius Mättig (1585–1650). The foundation promotes education, science, and the preservation of the cultural-historical heritage in Upper Lusatia, particularly in Bautzen. It awards the Dr. Gregorius Mättig Scholarship every two years and initiates projects for the restoration of historical monuments, cultural revitalization, and cross-border exchange with the Czech Republic and Poland.

Mission & Vision
Out of Christian charity and the humanistic heritage of Dr. Gregorius Mättig arises the mission to support gifted young people in Upper Lusatia, to preserve and research the cultural and historical heritage of the region, and to strengthen civic engagement and international neighborhood relations. Through the biennially awarded Dr. Gregorius Mättig Scholarship, educational sponsorships, and the sponsorship of cultural events, the foundation aims to support young talents and foster identification with Bautzen and Upper Lusatia.
Target groups
The funding programs of the Dr. Gregorius Mättig Foundation are aimed at early-career researchers and students (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral projects) who contribute research on the cultural and regional history of Upper Lusatia; at young people from Bautzen and the surrounding district with outstanding talents and limited financial means; at institutions and associations that preserve, develop, and present the cultural heritage of Bautzen; as well as at initiatives for cross-border cultural exchange with the Czech Republic and Poland.
