About the funder

The Dr. Rolf Linnenkamp Foundation was established at the end of 2005 in Munich based on a testamentary directive of the art historian Dr. Rolf Linnenkamp (1925–2003). Linnenkamp was editor-in-chief and co-publisher of "Kindler's Painting Encyclopedia" and developed mathematical analyses of classical proportion systems, such as the golden ratio of the cube. The foundation is a legally capable public foundation under civil law, recognized by the Government of Upper Bavaria (01.12.2005) and classified as a non-profit organization (Tax Office Munich, 15.12.2005). It awards funding prizes (e.g., €2,500 per awardee in 2012) and supports young researchers whose projects serve the study of mathematically comprehensible structural analyses of artworks.

Mission & Vision

The Dr. Rolf Linnenkamp Foundation supports scientific research projects that explore the quality of artworks through mathematically verifiable structural analyses. It aims in particular to assist young researchers in gaining new insights into the underlying laws of proportion in art and thus contribute to the interdisciplinary connection of art history, mathematics, and artistic practice.

Target groups

The funding opportunities are aimed at young researchers (individuals or research groups) whose research projects focus on mathematical structural analyses of artworks. Support is provided particularly for theses, dissertations, and design projects that pursue the foundation's statutory purpose – the exploration of art quality through mathematical analysis.
