About the funder

The Archbishop Hermann Foundation is a legally independent ecclesiastical foundation under public law based in Freiburg im Breisgau. Founded in 1863 at the initiative of Archbishop Hermann von Vicari, it supports theological and pastoral education as well as Christian art and culture in the Archdiocese of Freiburg. Its tasks include the direct support of students (scholarships), the promotion of doctoral, habilitation, and research projects, as well as the construction and maintenance of pastoral and religious education facilities. Furthermore, the foundation supports exhibitions, music and literary projects, and acquires important art and cultural assets.

Mission & Vision

The Archbishop Hermann Foundation is committed to sustainably strengthening theological and pastoral education in the Archdiocese of Freiburg and promoting Christian culture. Our goal is to contribute, through scholarships, project funding, and construction measures, to keeping church-related training and continuing education pathways vibrant and to preserving and further developing art, music, and literature with a Christian character.

Target groups

The funding programs of the Archbishop Hermann Foundation are aimed at students of Catholic theology as well as pastoral and religious education training at universities in the Archdiocese of Freiburg who aspire to professional work in pastoral or religious education services. The foundation also supports doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars in the fields of theology, pastoral studies, and religious education. Furthermore, it promotes projects and institutions of Christian art, music, and literature in the Archdiocese of Freiburg, as well as organizations and facilities dedicated to the construction and maintenance of training, continuing education, and professional institutions in pastoral service.
