About the funder
As a cultural institution of national significance, the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha preserves a unique ensemble of buildings, gardens, and collections representing European residential culture. The foundation owns over 1.15 million objects across more than 80 collection areas in art and cultural history as well as natural history. Friedenstein Castle, Germany's largest early Baroque castle complex, is largely preserved in its original state and serves as a universal center of knowledge from the Reformation to the present day. The foundation cooperates closely with the Gotha Research Library (University of Erfurt), the Thuringian State Archive, and other partners to preserve, research, and communicate the historical heritage.
