About the funder

The Gerda Henkel Foundation is a private foundation under civil law based in Düsseldorf. It was established in 1976 and has since supported more than 9,000 projects. Its funding focus is on the historical humanities – particularly archaeology, history, art history, legal history, prehistory and early history, as well as the history of science – and cultural preservation. Notable programs include research projects, research fellowships, doctoral support, special programs on democracy, flight, lost cities, and security/society/state, as well as the L.I.S.A. science platform.

Mission & Vision

The Gerda Henkel Foundation supports historical humanities and cultural preservation in Germany and worldwide. It promotes excellent research and is also committed to science communication in order to make research findings accessible to a broad public.

Target groups

Funding is provided to scholars of all nationalities – individual researchers, research groups, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers. Dedicated programs target endangered and refugee scholars as well as early-career researchers in Africa (Lisa Maskell Scholarships). Geographic focus: international, with an emphasis on Germany. A completed doctorate is generally a prerequisite for scholarships.
