About the funder

The Gerhard Trede Foundation was established in the will of Gerhard and Elsa Trede and was approved by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg on September 13, 1999. It manages the legacy of the prominent German composer Gerhard Trede and uses the income from the foundation’s capital as well as the exploitation rights of his extensive music archive to support projects in the field of music. The foundation works particularly closely with the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre (HfMT) and supports festivals, concert series, composition competitions, and scholarships.

Mission & Vision

The funding programs of the Gerhard Trede Foundation are aimed at students and educators in the fields of music and theater, particularly at the HfMT Hamburg, young composers and arrangers participating in composition competitions (Gerhard Trede Prize), professional musicians and ensembles implementing projects such as festivals (Mendelssohn Summer School, NORDLIED Festival) and concert series (Music – Human – Medicine), as well as institutions and initiatives offering interdisciplinary and intercultural music projects with an international focus.
