About the funder
The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) is an interdisciplinary research institute of the Leibniz Association based in Hamburg. It comprises four regional institutes (Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Middle East Studies) and overarching research priorities such as peace and security, globalization and development, as well as global orders. With a team of over 90 researchers, GIGA conducts comparative regional research, policy advising, and numerous publications (GIGA Focus, Working Papers, Journal Family). The institute is internationally networked, advises political decision-makers, and promotes the exchange between science and practice.

Mission & Vision
The GIGA aims to contribute to a better understanding of global and regional developments through excellent, empirically grounded, and politically relevant research. It seeks to provide well-founded policy advice and promote international knowledge exchange to support sustainable solutions to global challenges. In doing so, the GIGA combines regional expertise with comparative social science methods and relies on close cooperation with partner institutions worldwide.

The primary target groups of GIGA are political decision-makers in government and administration, international organizations, civil society actors, as well as researchers and students of regional and global studies. Additionally, the offerings are aimed at journalists, interested citizens, and professional networks in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East who wish to benefit from current research findings and analyses.
