Private foundation

About the funder

The Hans and Ria Messer Foundation is a non-profit foundation under private law, founded in 1978 by Dr. Hans Messer and supplemented in 2004 by Ria Messer. In 2024, both predecessor foundations were merged to more efficiently pool resources for education, science, research, and social projects. The foundation supports scientific projects (basic and applied research) as well as STEM initiatives and medical research at universities and non-university institutions. Furthermore, it promotes general and vocational education, supports students through scholarships and awards, and is committed to charitable activities and welfare services for disadvantaged or needy individuals.

Mission & Vision

The foundation positions itself where public funds and government initiatives reach their limits. It offers both short-term aid measures and long-term, profound solutions to effect sustainable change in our society. The goal is a fair, future-proof society in which thirst for knowledge is rewarded, innovative spirit is encouraged, and pioneering work is supported, without losing sight of social justice and health.

Target groups

The funding programs are aimed at scientific institutions, universities, and non-profit research organizations in Germany, as well as early-career researchers. Students, trainees, and pupils can receive scholarships and awards. In the social sector, the foundation supports individuals who are physically, mentally, or emotionally impaired, as well as people who have fallen into hardship through no fault of their own. Organizations in the welfare sector and local initiatives are also supported.
