About the funder
The Heinz Besser Foundation is a non-profit and charitable foundation based in Lübeck. It was recognized as a legal foundation by the Ministry of the Interior, Rural Areas, Integration and Equality of the State of Schleswig-Holstein on December 28, 2020. The foundation was established by the architect, entrepreneur, and benefactor Heinz Besser (1921–2017) with the purpose of using his substantial assets to promote significant charitable objectives. Its commitment particularly includes scientific research and development, humanitarian aid for blind and visually impaired individuals in need, as well as support for public health services.

Mission & Vision
The Heinz Besser Foundation promotes excellent science and research in the field of ophthalmology, supports needy blind and visually impaired individuals in accordance with § 53 of the German Fiscal Code, and contributes to strengthening public health services and public healthcare. Its goal is to improve the quality of life for visually impaired people through sustainable investments in research and direct assistance, and to support innovative ophthalmological projects.
