About the funder

The Hessian Cultural Foundation is a legally recognized private foundation established in 1988 by the Hessian state government with the purpose of promoting and preserving art and culture in the state of Hesse. It particularly supports museums, libraries, and archives through the acquisition and safeguarding of especially valuable cultural assets, art objects, and collections of outstanding significance. Furthermore, it promotes significant projects related to the documentation and presentation of art and cultural history topics as well as the publication of relevant exhibition catalogues. Over more than three decades, approximately 690 projects in the fields of exhibitions, acquisitions, and publications have been supported with a total of around €46 million.

Mission & Vision

The Hessian Cultural Foundation is committed to the promotion and preservation of outstanding art and cultural assets in Hesse. It enables museums, libraries, archives, and comparable non-profit institutions to realize significant cultural projects, thereby contributing to the safeguarding and transmission of cultural treasures for the present and future. Its activities are guided by the principle of one-third co-financing and covering a funding gap, in order to specifically strengthen the quality and diversity of cultural offerings in Hesse.

Target groups

Eligible for funding are non-profit institutions in the state of Hesse, in particular museums, art associations, libraries, and archives. The programs are aimed at institutions that realize exhibitions, produce scholarly documentation and publications, or wish to enhance their collections with outstanding artworks, archival materials, and manuscripts. The Hessian Cultural Foundation supports projects that serve the dissemination of art and cultural history and have a recognizable regional connection to Hesse.
