About the funder

The Hiege Foundation – the German Skin Cancer Foundation was established in 2006 by the Hiege family in memory of Fleur Hiege, who died of malignant melanoma at the age of 32. This legally recognized, non-profit foundation exclusively and directly supports research in the field of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of skin cancer. Since its inception, 48 research projects, three habilitation scholarships, and twelve Fleur Hiege Memorial Awards have been funded with a total of over 2 million euros in seed funding. In 2022, the "Fleur Hiege Center for Skin Cancer Research" was established at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Administrative costs are covered by income from assets, ensuring that all donations fully benefit the research projects.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to accelerate basic and clinical research on malignant melanoma and other forms of skin cancer through targeted seed funding, thereby enabling the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We particularly support young researchers in Germany, promote scientific exchange at professional conferences, and provide affected individuals with expert information on prevention and treatment options.

Target groups

The funding programs of the Hiege Foundation primarily target distinguished scientists in skin cancer research at German-speaking university hospitals and research institutions who wish to initiate new project ideas in the fields of diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of skin cancer. Preference is given to early-career researchers and projects that have not yet received other funding. Furthermore, the foundation provides information services and guidance aimed at patients and their relatives.
