About the funder

The International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (IFLOS) is a non-profit foundation based in Hamburg. It was established by representatives from business, academia, and public institutions, with the support of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Federal Republic of Germany. IFLOS promotes research and teaching in the field of international and maritime commercial law, initiates dialogue between scholars, judges of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and practitioners in the maritime industry, supports the exchange on the concrete effects of international legal regulations, and raises awareness of the Tribunal’s possibilities for peaceful dispute resolution, especially for developing countries. Furthermore, the foundation awards scholarships and integrates interns, primarily from developing countries, into international law of the sea practice.

Mission & Vision

The International Foundation for the Law of the Sea is committed to the universal application and further development of international maritime law. Its goal is to promote exchange between academia, the judiciary, and maritime practice, to support research and teaching, and to make the peaceful resolution of maritime law disputes accessible to a wide range of stakeholders, especially from developing countries.

Target groups

The funding programs and events of IFLOS are aimed at scholars and students of international maritime law, judges and staff of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, practitioners from the maritime industry, as well as political decision-makers. In addition, the foundation specifically supports international young lawyers and interns from developing countries.
