Private foundation

About the funder

The Karl-Foerster Foundation for Applied Vegetation Science was established in 1965 as a special gift for Karl Foerster’s 91st birthday. Guided by the principle of a practice-oriented understanding of vegetation science, the non-profit foundation is committed to qualified plant production and aesthetically sophisticated use of plants in urban open spaces, private gardens, and the natural landscape. Its funding activities include the dissemination of specialized knowledge, support for practice-oriented scientific work, as well as the education and training of young professionals. A voluntary board of trustees decides on the allocation of funds, while a circle of friends and supporters provides the foundation with ideological and financial backing.

Mission & Vision

In the spirit of Karl Foerster, the foundation promotes engagement with plants as an integrative design element in landscape architecture. Through unbureaucratic support and funding of research, teaching, and practice, it aims to motivate emerging professionals and scientists to harness the potential of living plant communities and to enhance biodiversity as well as the quality of life in public and private spaces.

Target groups

The funding programs are aimed at students (Bachelor, Master, Diploma) and graduates of landscape architecture, vegetation science, and related disciplines. Furthermore, the foundation supports practice-oriented researchers, young gardeners, as well as professionals in research, teaching, and planning who deal with plant usage in urban and near-natural contexts. Projects from universities, universities of applied sciences, and research institutes, as well as events (conferences, summer schools, awards) benefit from the funding.
