The award is presented in the form of a small sculpture by the artist Günter Anlauf, thereby emphasizing the symbiosis of artistic expression and applied vegetation science. Nominations are accepted exclusively through members of the advisory board or the foundation’s circle of friends. The public award ceremony takes place at the site of the honored example and provides a dignified platform for the lived connection of nature, culture, and urban design.

The internationally active Karl Foerster Foundation for Applied Vegetation Science continuously offers interested stakeholders from the public sector, businesses, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and private individuals the opportunity to receive recognition for their professionally grounded and creatively practical contributions. Evaluation criteria include, besides the actual contribution to the revitalization of urban and rural spaces, the innovative potential in journalism, artistic practice, and educational mediation. The award aims to raise awareness, promote professional exchange, and provide impetus for further projects that strengthen the understanding of the importance of plants in shaping our living environments.
