Kloster St. Johannis

Private foundation

About the funder

Kloster St. Johannis is a non-profit foundation and Protestant ladies' foundation in Hamburg-Eppendorf with an almost 800-year history. Founded as the Cistercian nunnery Alt-Herwardeshude (1246) and reconstituted after the Reformation in 1536 as a Protestant convent for unmarried daughters of Hamburg patrician and bourgeois families, it today offers modernized apartments in a listed ensemble of buildings to single women aged 60 and over. The monastery complex, including a chapel, monastery hall, conservatory, and library, is situated in a park-like setting on the Außenalster and serves cultural, social, and private events. Preservation and renovation are ensured through loans, donations, and the foundation's sponsorship, which also supports residents in need.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of Kloster St. Johannis and to provide elderly, single women with a dignified, self-determined living and community environment. We promote neighborhood solidarity, cultural participation, and a Christian-humanistic way of life. Through responsible foundation management, we ensure the continued existence of the ladies' foundation and support residents regardless of their financial situation.

Target groups

The funding program of Kloster St. Johannis is aimed at single women aged 60 to 75, preferably daughters of Hamburg patrician and bourgeois families. Admission is granted following a personal interview with the matron. The residents receive a self-contained, modernized apartment of various sizes, are self-sufficient, and participate in cultural and social activities within the monastery. The ladies' foundation currently houses 72 women.
