The Department of Environment and Energy Management within the Office of the Lower Austrian State Government coordinates all matters related to environmental protection and assumes responsibility for the economic aspects of environmental protection, insofar as these are not assigned to other departments. It is responsible for waste management (excluding legal matters and official expert activities), the legal supervision of the Lower Austrian Marchfeld Canal Act, and the promotion of spatial planning measures. Additionally, it manages state shares in environmentally oriented companies, oversees land acquisitions within the framework of the building rights initiative, and the energy sector, unless otherwise regulated. The department also manages the state's participations in "Natur im Garten GmbH."
