The Department of Environmental and Energy Management within the Office of the Lower Austrian State Government coordinates all matters related to environmental protection and handles the financial management of environmental protection issues not assigned elsewhere. It is responsible for waste management (excluding legal matters and official expert activities), the legal affairs of the Lower Austrian Marchfeld Canal Act, as well as the promotion and administration of spatial planning measures and land acquisition within the framework of the state's building rights initiative. Furthermore, it manages state-owned shares in environmental protection companies and in Natur im Garten GmbH and is responsible for energy management matters, insofar as these are not assigned to another department.
