Its goal is to systematically research the structures, functions, and change processes of the Baltic Sea and, on this basis, to develop strategies for sustainable marine use, coastal development, and environmental policy. In doing so, the institute places great value on interdisciplinary collaboration, open data provision, and knowledge transfer within national and international networks.
Target groups
The funding and research offerings of the IOW are aimed at scientists in the fields of oceanography, marine chemistry, biogeochemistry, and coastal ecology; national and international research institutions as well as universities; authorities and administrations at the federal, state, and municipal levels; industry partners and NGOs interested in maritime technology development, environmental monitoring, and coastal management; as well as the interested public and educational institutions seeking information about Baltic Sea research.
