About the funder

The Immanuel Kant Foundation – Europe’s Heritage as a Mission was established in 2004 in Freiburg i. Br. and is dedicated to promoting a Kantian cosmopolitan ethos. Drawing on the writings of Immanuel Kant, especially "Perpetual Peace," it sees itself as an advocate for an ethically grounded, democratic global domestic policy. The foundation honors individuals and organizations distinguished by civil courage, independent public engagement, and commitment to peace, human rights, the rule of law, and environmental protection. Additionally, it supports university students who engage deeply with Kant’s work, as well as musically talented young artists.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to promote a reflective, cosmopolitan attitude based on Kantian principles. We believe that mutual respect, human dignity, and the freedom of each individual are inalienable foundations for peaceful coexistence. Through our work, we aim to address global challenges by means of critical enlightenment, civil society engagement, and institutional reforms, thereby carrying the European heritage forward into the future as a mandate in the spirit of Kant.

Target groups

Individuals and organizations that contribute through courageous, independent public engagement to peacekeeping, the rule of law, human rights, and environmental protection are supported; early-career researchers and students, especially at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, the Freiburg University of Education, and the Freiburg University of Music, who engage intensively with Kant’s work and its interdisciplinary impact; as well as musically talented students of the Freiburg University of Music who require financial assistance for their education.
