Moses Mendelssohn Akademie Halberstadt – Internationale Begegnungsstätte
About the funder
The Moses Mendelssohn Academy Halberstadt Foundation (MMA) was established in 1996 by committed citizens to preserve and further develop the Jewish heritage in Halberstadt. The founder was Dipl. Kfm. Manfred Wolff. The MMA owns and restores historic buildings of the former Jewish center (Klaus, Cantor’s House, Mikveh House, site of the Baroque synagogue). In 2001, it founded the Berend Lehmann Museum in the Mikveh House, which exclusively exhibits objects with a local connection. Today, the MMA, together with the museum, is an internationally networked educational and meeting place offering research, exhibition, and event formats to promote empathy, tolerance, and combat antisemitism.

Mission & Vision
Vision: To showcase Jewish history at an authentic site and facilitate encounters. Self-understanding: The MMA and the Berend Lehmann Museum preserve historic buildings and Jewish cultural heritage. They research, collect, preserve, and interpret both tangible and intangible heritage to promote empathy and tolerance and to counteract discrimination. In Halberstadt’s historic Jewish quarter, they tell the story of the role of Jewish actors in the region through authentic objects. Through cooperation with descendants and academic partners, they expand their collections and research. Digital offerings complement exhibitions to enhance global participation and accessibility.
Target groups
The funding opportunities and programs are aimed at educational and cultural institutions, research institutions, school classes and students, as well as local and international visitors of all ages interested in German-Jewish history and culture. Additionally, Jewish communities, descendants of former Halberstadt Jews, and the interested public benefit from exhibitions, guided tours, and academic conferences.
