About the funder

The German-American Scientific Relations Foundation (SDAW) was established in 1998 by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Helga Haftendorn under the umbrella of the Stifterverband. It promotes excellent transatlantic research as well as international foreign and security policy cooperation among Western countries. The focus is on the sustainable support of early-career researchers through doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships as well as conference grants. With an endowment of approximately €9.7 million and annual project funding commitments of up to €190,000, the SDAW strengthens early international networking, interdisciplinary exchange, and dialogue between German and American scientists.

Mission & Vision

The SDAW aims to support outstanding research projects on transatlantic relations, international politics, as well as the foreign and security policies of Western countries. The focus is on promoting young scholars to enable early networking on an international level, facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, and intensify the scientific dialogue between Germany and the USA.

Target groups

The funding programs of the SDAW are aimed at doctoral and postdoctoral researchers as well as early-career scholars engaged with issues of transatlantic relations and international security and foreign policy. Support is provided for active conference participation, doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships to foster long-term networking of young researchers in Germany and the USA and to support their academic careers.
