About the funder

The Seafaring Gratitude Foundation was established by the widow of the shipowner Adolph Woermann through the donation of her residence in the years following the First World War. It maintains the historic Adolph Woermann House and supports vocational training classes for shipping clerks at the vocational school at Berliner Tor. The non-profit foundation is supervised by Hamburg authorities and operates according to its statutes from 2016. Its core mission is to ensure adequate housing for retired captains and their widows, as well as to promote maritime education and the preservation of traditions.

Mission & Vision

The Seafaring Gratitude Foundation is committed to expressing thanks and recognition to Hamburg’s seafarers and their survivors. Our goal is to provide a dignified residence through the maintenance of the Adolph Woermann House while simultaneously promoting maritime education. We see ourselves as guardians of the seafaring heritage and aim to contribute to strengthening the shipping and port city of Hamburg through educational support and cultural offerings.

Target groups

The funding programs are aimed at retired captains and their widows, trainees and students in maritime vocational training (especially shipping clerks), shipping companies and nautical clubs, as well as event organizers wishing to rent the historic social rooms (Heinrich Christian Schumacher Room and Monte Rosa Hall) for corporate and private occasions. Family celebrations, seminars, and conferences with a maritime theme find a unique setting here.
