About the funder

The Valentin-Ostertag Foundation is a private foundation based in Bad Dürkheim (Rhineland-Palatinate). It is considered the oldest secular foundation in Germany and traces its origins to the will of the jurist Dr. Valentin Ostertag, who died in Nuremberg in 1507; the formal establishment of the foundation took place in 1511. Originally founded to support those in need – particularly children, students, and those intending to marry – it now supports schools and kindergartens in Bad Dürkheim. Notable programs include the annual distribution of donations to educational institutions, the Veltensweck tradition on Valentine's Day, and awards for school graduates.
