Viola-Stiftung Walter Witte

Private foundation

About the funder

The Viola Foundation Walter Witte was established in 1994 by the lawyer and art enthusiast Walter Witte with an endowment of 100,000 DM. The purpose of the foundation is the care, promotion, and dissemination of old and new viola music, with a focus on supporting talented individuals. Since 1996, it has organized competitions for young violists (Hindemith Competition) and since 1997 composition competitions for young composers. The foundation awards prize money (viola competition: up to €10,000; composition competition: a total of €6,000) and scholarships to needy, highly talented students. Additionally, it supports prizewinner concerts and world premieres of the winners of its composition competition.
