Description

The Horizon Europe initiative “Advanced Recovery of Critical Raw Materials from Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)” supports companies, research institutions, non-profit, and public organizations within the EU in developing and scaling novel recycling processes for the recovery of strategic and critical raw materials (such as rare earth elements, precious metals) from electronic waste. The focus is on projects that reduce dependency on imports while simultaneously minimizing environmental impact and ecosystem disruption. Eligible applicants are consortia with at least three partners from different EU or Associated countries, demonstrably possessing expertise in research and development in raw material recycling. The funding amount is up to €5 million per application with a 100% funding rate, covering personnel costs, material costs, and subcontractor services. Key evaluation criteria include innovation content, economic viability, and contribution to the EU circular economy. Applications can be submitted until 17.09.2026.

The program aims to link research and innovation for improved collection, sorting, and recovery of WEEE materials. Technologies that are scalable and suitable as market solutions will be funded. Consortia are encouraged to leverage synergies with other EU initiatives such as the European Green Deal or the Critical Raw Materials Act. A structured funding process ensures quality: projects with clear milestones, realistic time and cost plans, as well as comprehensive exploitation and dissemination strategies are sought. This European funding measure makes a significant contribution to strengthening innovation capacity, reducing waste volumes, and promoting a sustainable circular economy.
