Description

Advancing integrated scenarios and prediction models for informing transition to a nature positive society targets consortia from universities, research institutions, companies, and non-profit organizations active in the field of environmental and biodiversity modeling. Under Horizon Europe, a grant of up to €5 million per project for 36 months is awarded (100% funding rate). Applications can be submitted by educational institutions, start-ups, foundations, as well as public bodies from EU Member States and associated countries until 17.09.2026. The objective is the development and validation of integrated scenarios and predictive models that support policies for various ecosystems and provide decision-making foundations for the European Green Deal, the Biodiversity Strategy 2030, and related frameworks. Funding covers personnel, material, subcontracting, travel and accommodation costs, equipment procurement, and data acquisition. Real estate purchases, retrospective costs, and pure infrastructure investments are not eligible.

Projects should design scenario frameworks that represent human-environment interactions (e.g., climate, land use, social changes) and quantify uncertainties. At least two European biogeographical regions must be examined in case studies. Interdisciplinary teams must demonstrate expertise in ecology, climate, social, and economic sciences and provide experience in model intercomparison experiments. Consortia must consist of at least three independent institutions from different countries and ensure close cooperation with the EC Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity as well as ESA projects. Evaluation criteria include clarity and relevance of research objectives, credibility of expected impacts, and quality and efficiency of implementation. Required application documents are CVs, project and scenario descriptions, financial plan, and proof of interdisciplinary expertise.
