Description

In Saxony, the Housing Adaptation Directive (RL WRA) promotes comprehensive renovation measures to adapt living spaces to be barrier-free according to the needs of residents with mobility impairments. Private individuals who occupy an owner-occupied apartment or single-family house, or are contractually bound tenants, can apply for a grant if they themselves or a person living in the household is expected to have a permanent mobility impairment. The funding measure aims to enable and facilitate access to the building and the use of the living spaces. All work must comply with the technical specifications of DIN 18040-2 or demonstrate equivalent alternative solutions. Additionally, there are maximum living area limits depending on household size, and tenants require a landlord’s consent declaration without any obligation to restore the original condition.

The grant rate is generally 80% of eligible expenses, and in hardship cases – such as recipients of social assistance or housing benefit – even 100%. The maximum funding amount is up to €8,000; for wheelchair-accessible conversions, up to €20,000 is possible. Applications can be submitted continuously, provided the application is made before the planned work begins. The Saxon Development Bank – Förderbank – (SAB) processes the procedure on behalf of the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior and supports interested parties throughout the entire process. This provides important assistance to interested owners and tenants to make living spaces barrier-free and comfortable in the long term.
