Description
Impulse for a New Life is a nationwide initiative by the DFB Foundation Sepp Herberger that promotes the reintegration of juvenile offenders. In correctional and juvenile detention facilities, teams of up to 15 participants aged 16 to 24 are formed, who participate weekly in structured football training. This training imparts not only athletic skills but also, above all, fair play, team spirit, and social competencies. Additionally, the participants regularly undergo qualification and educational programs, such as referee or coach training as well as application and anti-violence workshops. Support is provided by a "team around the team" consisting of facility staff, employees of the Federal Employment Agency, and other partners. The goal is to offer young people realistic prospects for life after incarceration and to sustainably reduce recidivism rates.
The funding is aimed at public institutions nationwide that wish to provide maximum support to juveniles with at least 24 months remaining in their sentence and good conduct during incarceration. Binding prerequisites include, among others, immediate availability for the German labor market, strong motivation to begin work or training, and demonstrable willingness to engage in education. Selection is made according to uniform criteria of the respective correctional facility. Applications can be submitted at any time, as the program is continuously awarded. The annual Sepp Herberger Cup, the largest football tournament behind prison walls in Germany, also serves as a sporting highlight that strengthens community spirit and rewards the teams' ambition.
