Architecture and Design: Funding for Associations, Comparable Institutions, and Individuals

The “Architecture and Design: Funding for Associations, Comparable Institutions, and Individuals” enables partial financing of annual programs and individual projects in the field of architecture and design in Vienna. Sponsors from interest groups, non-profit organizations, as well as individuals with Austrian residence or citizenship can submit applications almost year-round. The goal is to strengthen continuous exhibition and mediation structures through a grant that supports projects which would not be feasible or fully realizable without public funding. An appropriate personal contribution is expected according to economic capacity. Exceptions apply if a personal contribution is economically unreasonable. The endowed funding amount of approximately €2.236 million secures the budget, with advisory boards for architecture and design responsible for allocation. Funding priorities focus on artistic quality, fair pay, diversity, and sustainability, as well as on programs that increase public reach and intercultural participation. Support for emerging talent is also a key evaluation criterion, alongside the regular assurance of adequate opening hours and intercultural relevance.

Funding applications must be submitted online by October 15 of the previous year at the latest, using the general application form as well as the form for scholarships, acquisitions, and studios. Supplementary documents include a detailed project description, financing and annual program budget (including Excel cost calculation for architecture), statutes or association register excerpt, as well as CVs and portfolios of all involved artists. Structural renovations, studio conversions, and purely commercial projects are not eligible for funding. Additionally, concepts on fair pay, diversity, and preventive child protection and whistleblowing measures must be submitted for certain funding amounts. A technically flawless, complete submission is a prerequisite for eligibility and enables evaluation by the responsible expert advisory board.
