The Bavarian Cultural Fund supports special exhibitions and museum days of non-governmental museums of supraregional or wider regional significance throughout the Free State (excluding Munich and Nuremberg) with a grant. Eligible applicants include private individuals, public institutions, interest groups, foundations, as well as non-profit organizations and associations whose museums comply with the ICOM definition. Funded are defined project costs starting from €10,000, excluding ongoing administrative or operating expenses. The funding amount can be up to €1 million; the funding rate is up to 30% of eligible expenses. The central evaluation criterion is the substantive quality of the exhibition concept as well as the supraregional impact of the project.

Applications must be submitted annually by October 1 for the following year online to the responsible district government. The relevant district government is that of the applicant’s location; for projects spanning multiple districts, the main office of the sponsor applies. Approval is only possible if the project has not yet started and there is no parallel funding from other state funding programs or the Bavarian State Foundation. Required documents include details on the location and duration of the event, a presentation of the objects to be used, as well as the detailed exhibition concept. The K.6 Department at the State Ministry for Science and the Arts decides on the grant based on the budget funds in the spring of the following year.
