Description
The Berlin Program for Sustainable Development (BENE 2) with funding focus 5 supports innovative projects that contribute to the protection and preservation of urban nature as well as the reduction of environmental pollution. The measure is granted as a subsidy and is aimed at public institutions as well as non-profit organizations that implement their projects in Berlin. The funding program aims to promote a climate-neutral and environmentally friendly urban landscape by supporting investments in green and blue infrastructure. In this context, projects that include, for example, nature and landscape conservation areas, the expansion of green and recreational spaces, as well as nature-based solutions to strengthen urban infrastructure, can be funded.
Selected projects must be implemented within the state of Berlin and demonstrate secured overall financing. Furthermore, the realization of the project without funding is neither possible to the necessary extent nor without significant delay. Eligible expenses include investments and material costs directly related to the intended environmental and nature conservation objectives, whereas leasing, depreciation, and indirect costs are not supported. Applicants, which include main administrations and district administrations as well as corporations, foundations, and state-owned Berlin housing companies, benefit from a funding rate of up to 80% – in exceptional cases even up to 100%. Project selection is based on strict criteria, emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and relevance to environmental and nature conservation in the urban area.
The funding program also integrates aspects such as energy efficiency, digital infrastructure, and urban development, reflecting an interdisciplinary approach to urban challenges. Within the framework of a fast-track procedure and thematic calls, projects are reviewed and invited to submit formal applications. This approach generates synergies that not only contribute to improving the quality of life in the city but also strengthen biological foundations and natural diversity. Public organizations and non-profit institutions are encouraged to submit innovative concepts for sustainable urban development within the BENE 2 initiative – from creating inner-city quiet and recreational areas to reducing air and fine dust pollution. Project outlines can be submitted until the end of 2027.
