Description

The funding measure "Funeral Costs (Welfare Burial)" of the City of Graz enables, from 01.01.2025, the full reimbursement of simple funeral costs within the framework of a welfare burial according to § 11 para. 1 StSUG. Funding is provided for deceased persons whose burial costs cannot be covered from the estate, nor by relatives, insurance companies, or other liable parties, provided the death occurred within the territory of the City of Graz. Both private individuals and public institutions can apply in writing to the Social Welfare Office for a grant to cover the necessary expenses for a simple burial. There is no budget limit; funding is provided at 100% of the eligible expenses. Applications can be submitted at any time without restriction, and there is no deadline.

This measure is part of social welfare and falls within the thematic areas of "Social Affairs" as well as "Labor & Social Affairs." It is primarily aimed at municipal offices, funeral service providers, and relatives who submit an informal written application to the Social Welfare Office. Only the application itself is required; additional proof of the impossibility of cost coverage by third parties or from the estate must be provided if necessary during the benefit verification process. The processing is carried out in compliance with the General Funding Guidelines of the City of Graz. This voluntary assistance ensures that a dignified burial is guaranteed even in difficult social situations and that hardship cases are avoided.
