Description
The community fund “Strengthening Democracy” supports civil society initiatives in Hamburg that specifically promote democratic values such as solidarity, respect, and non-violence, and foster social cohesion. In three consecutive phases, non-profit associations, initiatives, and small organizations can apply for funding of up to €5,000: Phase 1 focuses on district-related democracy work in the eastern and southwestern parts of Hamburg, Phase 2 targets group-specific programs against anti-democratic propaganda, and Phase 3 strengthens media literacy and digital visibility. Funding covers fees, material expenses, and volunteer allowances, which can be used to implement dialogue formats, workshops, creative campaigns, or digital projects. The projects contribute to countering anti-democratic tendencies locally, reaching young people and disadvantaged groups, and reinforcing trust in democratic institutions.
Eligible for funding are non-profit organizations based in or primarily working in Hamburg. Applications for Phase 3 can be submitted until June 30, 2026, with the earliest possible project start in August 2026. To apply, a short online form must be completed and a current tax exemption certificate uploaded; upon project completion, a final report including proof of expenditure must be submitted. Selection is based on relevance to democratic values and social cohesion, focus on selected districts or target groups, and contribution to media literacy. This low-threshold funding creates a vibrant network of committed actors who jointly strengthen democratic culture in Hamburg in a sustainable way.
