Description
Digital twins and/or their essential components for environment, climate, and security supports innovative research and development projects within the European Union with a funding volume of €5 – 7.5 million per project. The objective is the design and implementation of novel digital twins or key modules of existing twins to enhance precaution, resilience, and decision support regarding environmental, climate, and security risks. Eligible applicants are legal entities from EU member states or associated countries that form a consortium of at least three independent partners from different countries, with coordinators residing in an EU/associated country. For submission by 16 June 2026, the following documents are required: application form (Part A), technical description (Part B), financial plan, and ethics self-assessment. The funding rate is 100%, and eligible costs include personnel expenses, subcontractors, material costs, and travel expenses (excluding retroactive costs).
Projects must demonstrate excellence in concept and methodology as well as prove their potential to achieve the expected results and impacts. Implementation will be evaluated based on the quality and efficiency of the work plan. Three-phase validation cycles are envisaged in at least three application areas, along with clear integration into the DestinE system and other data lab infrastructures. Special emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches, AI-supported data fusion, 3D visualization, and ethical trustworthiness. Contributions should create EU-wide synergies with existing digital twin initiatives and enable decision-makers to present complex risk scenarios comprehensibly. The announcement of results is expected approximately five months after the deadline, with contract signing around eight months after the application deadline.
