ERDF 2021–2027: Promotion of Sustainable Urban Mobility

The ERDF initiative to promote sustainable urban mobility in Berlin supports innovative projects aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions and adapting to climate change with approximately EUR 90.7 million (EUR 26 million EU funds, EUR 64.7 million national funds) until the end of 2029. Eligible applicants include public administrations (state, districts), subordinate authorities, corporations, institutions and foundations under public law, as well as non-profit, charitable and church organizations and public enterprises that implement sustainable transport strategies, cycling infrastructure, barrier-free public transport infrastructure, or alternative propulsion systems. Applications are submitted electronically to the Senate Department for Mobility, Traffic, Climate Protection and Environment. A preliminary consultation with the program service provider B.& S.U. mbH ensures project maturity and consideration of the selection criteria.

Funding is provided for investments in bicycle parking facilities, structural improvements of transfer options, concepts for climate-friendly commercial traffic, as well as exemplary testing of innovative vehicles with alternative propulsion. At least one of the four central evaluation criteria – contribution to CO₂ reduction, shift of individual traffic to environmentally friendly transport modes, climate compatibility of infrastructure investments, or degree of innovation of propulsion systems – must be met. Grants are awarded as subsidies starting from EUR 30,000, and for investment projects from EUR 200,000. The geographical scope is limited to the state of Berlin, with the predominant use of the funded measures and vehicles required within the urban area. Applications can be submitted continuously under the standard procedure; project-specific calls will be announced separately.
