Funding objective

The funding program "Development of Digital Technologies" aims to expand and strengthen future technologies, digital innovations, and infrastructures. In addition to promoting key technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, distributed ledger technologies (blockchain), and robotics, further focuses include the development of trustworthy identity management solutions, the expansion of communication technologies (5G/6G), as well as the exploration of digital twins and data infrastructures with the resulting services. The solutions are intended to have a holistic and sustainable character and to contribute to environmental and climate protection.

Description

The nationwide funding program "Development of Digital Technologies" (2022–2026) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy offers application-oriented grants for collaborative projects aimed at the development and strengthening of digital cutting-edge technologies. The focus is on quantum computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, distributed ledger technologies (blockchain), and robotics, as well as trusted identity management solutions, advanced communication networks (5G/6G), digital twins, and data infrastructures with associated services. Holistic and sustainable approaches that integrate environmental and climate protection aspects and sustainably enhance competitiveness in the German and European internal markets are supported.

Eligible to apply are companies in the commercial sector, public institutions, interest groups, universities, non-university research institutions, and other research organizations with headquarters, branches, or establishments in Germany that conduct pre-competitive research, development, and innovation projects in collaboration. Project duration can be up to 36 months; the funding rate ranges from 50% for companies up to 100% of eligible expenses for research institutions, with bonus support for SMEs. Basic research, infrastructure measures, and in-house basic component redevelopments are not eligible for funding. Funding decisions are based on the criteria of innovation potential, technological feasibility, economic viability, and the benefit of new technologies and applications. Essential requirements include conducting project work in Germany, cross-sector cooperation including knowledge and technology transfer, and the primary use of results in Germany, Switzerland, or the EEA. Funding calls with detailed specifications and application submissions are conducted continuously via the electronic easy-Online system; a project outline and the official announcement documents are required.
