Preservation of the Architectural Heritage of the Cellar Lane in Lower Austria

The funding program for the preservation of the architectural heritage of cellar lanes in Lower Austria supports private owners and municipalities in safeguarding historically developed cellar lane ensembles. With a direct grant ranging from €400 to €4,000, conservation-oriented renovation measures, expert reports, and the restoration of historic architectural details are promoted. The goal is to preserve the simple originality of the cellar buildings, to sensitively further develop inherited structures, and to maintain landscape-typical sightlines. A respectful appreciation of traditional building culture is central, aiming to secure the authentic appearance of this special cultural landscape. The funding is provided continuously and offers private property owners as well as public institutions in rural regions of Lower Austria a reliable opportunity for professional renovation.

A prerequisite for funding is proof of ownership, a recognized location within a cellar lane, and the submission of complete construction documents and cost estimates. Ongoing operating costs, new construction measures, or retroactive expenses are not eligible for funding. Project selection is based on the appropriateness of the structural development within the ensemble and the sensitive preservation of historic details. For the application, a project description, photo and inventory documentation, as well as the required expert documents must be submitted. After a positive review, the grant is disbursed, if necessary following an on-site inspection by the processing office. Through this funding offer, the State of Lower Austria contributes to sustainably preserving the rich architectural heritage of its cellar lanes and visibly carrying it into the future.
