Description
The Erwin Schrödinger Program supports highly qualified postdoctoral researchers residing in Austria to conduct independent research projects at internationally renowned institutions. The aim is to gain international experience, explore new scientific fields and methods, and facilitate the transfer of know-how back to the domestic research landscape. The funding includes a foreign phase of 10 to 24 months and, optionally, a return phase of up to 12 months. The scholarship amount and travel allowances are based on the cost of living at the destination (classified into five zones). Additionally, career-promoting material costs (300 € per month), child allowances, and—for female project leaders—a four-month maternity leave replacement benefit are granted. Project leaders benefit from peer-reviewed funding of their personnel costs, material resources, and travel, as well as close supervision by host research institutions and professional evaluation by international experts.
Interested early-career researchers from all disciplines must hold a completed doctorate, have at least two international publications, and provide an invitation letter from the chosen host institution. Applications are submitted continuously via the electronic portal elane, where all necessary forms (project description, abstract, co-authors, and program-specific data) and attachments (bibliography, CV, invitation and recommendation letters) are uploaded. Accompanying publication lists and the selection of reviewers are also possible. Selection criteria include innovation content, research quality, feasibility, applicant qualifications, suitability of the host institution, as well as career development, ethics, and gender aspects. Following the completion of a peer-review process, the FWF Board of Trustees decides on the eligibility for funding and informs applicants in writing of the results.
