Description
The Estrongo Nachama Prize for Civil Courage and Tolerance is awarded annually by the Meridian Foundation in Berlin and honors outstanding commitment to social cohesion and democracy. Named after the Jewish chief cantor Estrongo Nachama (1918–2000), the award symbolizes reconciliation between religions and the courageous dedication to protecting discriminated minorities. With a prize money of €10,000, individuals and non-profit organizations are recognized for their selfless efforts against discrimination and for making civil courage visible in everyday life. The recognition aims not only to spotlight exemplary role models but also to strengthen awareness of tolerance and human dignity in the capital.
Proposals for potential laureates can be submitted annually by Berlin citizens starting from May 4th; the required letter of nomination forms the basis for selection. Based on established criteria—including contributions to the protection of disadvantaged minorities, promotion of social cohesion, and active engagement in civil courage—an independent jury evaluates the nominations received. Private individuals and non-profit organizations from Berlin who are actively involved in the funding areas of “Commitment to Social Cohesion/Democracy” and “Work & Social Affairs” are invited to make this important contribution to strengthening Berlin’s civil society and to jointly set a sign for tolerance and humanity.
