Description
The funding initiative for securing endangered data holdings and data resilience 2025–2027 by the German Research Foundation (DFG) provides nationwide accessible funding in the form of grants. The goal is the rescue and restoration of research data from foreign repositories whose availability or integrity is essential for German and European science. Funding is provided particularly for measures to procure additional storage capacities, personnel resources for indexing, curation, and subject-specific aggregation, as well as legal reviews. Furthermore, conditions and technologies for integrating secured datasets into supraregional or European structures can be supported. Eligible to apply are doctoral researchers and non-profit institutions of scientific information infrastructures, including libraries, archives, museums, research collections, as well as research data and computing centers based in Germany. Projects may have a duration of up to 24 months; applications for the funding years 2026 and 2027 can be submitted continuously until September 30, 2027.
The initiative covers personnel costs, material expenses, investments, and storage capacities; cost increases in the personnel area are not funded. Funded projects should be presented in English on 5–10 DIN A4 pages and include a clear statement of need, target structure, and sustainability concepts. As documentation in the application procedure, a project description, a CV of the applicants, and a financing plan must be submitted. Integration into existing infrastructures such as NFDI or EOSC is welcomed. The funding creates a robust, redundant data infrastructure that benefits the European Research Area and secures long-term open access to critical data holdings.
