Description

The state funding strengthens rail freight transport in Hesse through financial support for maintenance, reactivation, expansion, and new establishment measures at rail connections and loading points, as well as for studies on the resumption or permanent securing of rail connections. With the aim of reducing truck traffic, preserving jobs, and sustainably improving mobility, up to 50% of eligible expenses are granted as a non-repayable subsidy to companies and up to 60% to municipalities. Eligible costs include, among others, railway technical facilities (civil engineering, earthworks, track systems, bridges/overpasses, retaining walls, signals), access roads and loading streets, lighting, as well as planning and traffic engineering studies. Requirements such as implementation exclusively in Hesse, no parallel federal subsidy, non-discriminatory use, and professional as well as commercial qualification are prerequisites.

Eligible applicants are railway undertakings, shipping companies, municipal authorities, special-purpose associations, and consortia. The funding amount is a maximum of €100,000 per 12,500 tons of annual volume or per 500 wagons or per 0.5 million avoided truck kilometers. Applications can be submitted at any time; funding-relevant documents include, among others, the form (Annex 1), an informal application, an overview plan, a financing concept, cost estimates, contracts with infrastructure and transport companies, as well as photos of the prior condition. Approval is granted by the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport, Housing and Regional Development via Hessen Mobil – Road and Traffic Management.
