Description
Since 2006, the Palatine Catholic Church Foundation in Heidelberg has been supporting the repair, renovation, and preservation of churches, chapels, and parish houses in the formerly Electoral Palatinate part of Baden (from the Tauber Valley up to the outskirts of Karlsruhe). Non-profit organizations and public institutions, especially church congregations and local Catholic legal entities, may continuously apply for grants. Up to 50% of the recognized construction costs for structural measures on buildings used for sacred purposes are funded. A prerequisite is a positive technical assessment by Department 9 of the Archdiocesan Ordinariate Freiburg, timely submission of the application before the start of construction or approval, and for applications exceeding €50,000, prior consultation with the Department for Funding Activities and Foundation Communication. Historical legal titles exclude voluntary funding, whereas outstanding pastoral, art-historical, or historical significance can positively influence the funding amount.
The application requires a detailed project description with construction plans, justification of the need for renovation, a schedule, and a cost estimate with a financing proposal. Additionally, for larger projects, images and damage documentation must be attached. Decisions are made continuously, with funding applications submitted by March 31 reviewed at the summer meeting and those by September 30 at the winter meeting of the Supervisory Board. The grant is disbursed in installments depending on construction progress upon submission of appropriate invoice evidence. Upon completion, a proof of use must be submitted; otherwise, improperly used funds must be repaid. The program contributes to keeping the architectural heritage of the former Electoral Palatinate alive and strengthens the cultural identity as well as the infrastructure of Catholic communities in Baden-Württemberg.
