Promotion of Bicycle Traffic

The Styrian State Funding for Bicycle Traffic supports public-law entities, municipal associations, companies, and non-profit organizations in the planning and implementation of innovative everyday bicycle traffic projects. Non-repayable grants ranging from 50% to 100% are provided to promote measures for the expansion and densification of the bicycle path network: from planning services to the construction of new bike paths and underpasses, as well as guidance systems and targeted marketing campaigns in accordance with the Styrian Bicycle Traffic Strategy 2025. Municipal own contributions can be subsidized with accounting rates, and municipal construction services are also taken into account. Applications can be submitted continuously; the submission deadline for projects in the following year is September 30th; a mutually signed funding agreement is required. Key criteria include the quality of planning, contribution to the bicycle traffic strategy, sustainability aspects, and traffic safety. Bicycle parking facilities are also funded (up to 60% or 50% without a roof; capped per parking space: €1,500 with roofing, €250 without) as well as awareness-raising campaigns.

Interested municipalities, municipal associations, legal entities with municipal participation, as well as companies and comparable institutions, submit a project description, planning documents, schedule, cost estimate, and the form “Application for Assessment of Funding Eligibility.” After positive evaluation, the project-related implementation of the measure follows. The service and advisory team of Department 16 – Traffic and State Building supports all steps, from the development of bicycle traffic concepts to final accounting. The aim of the funding is to increase everyday bicycle traffic, improve traffic safety, and create bicycle-friendly infrastructure throughout Styria.
