Description
For decades, the Axel Springer Foundation has supported multi-day memorial site trips both domestically and abroad, as well as thematic excursions to Israel, in order to promote historical awareness and intercultural exchange. In particular, pupils, trainees, and students receive a travel cost subsidy of €60 per participant within Germany and €100 abroad. The funding is aimed at groups undertaking educational trips focused on remembrance, including overnight stays, and visiting sites such as concentration camp memorials, the Holocaust Memorial, or significant museums. The goal of this support is to actively engage young people in confronting German and European history and to foster empathy for the diverse fates of the past.
Eligible applicants include educational institutions, non-profit associations, and public bodies such as schools, vocational schools, universities, clubs, or church communities. An applicant must submit a formal letter, a draft program, a detailed budget including their own contribution and funds already raised, as well as a list of participants at least four months before the start of the trip. Accompanying teachers or other employed supervisors are excluded from receiving subsidies. Since decisions are generally made during quarterly board meetings, early submission is recommended. The ongoing funding opportunity allows for flexible planning of travel projects and offers all interested groups the chance to receive a grant.
