In North Rhine-Westphalia, the state offers grant funding for watercourse renaturation and flood protection to improve ecological watercourse development and flood prevention. Eligible applicants include municipalities, districts, water associations, public and private institutions, as well as companies. Funding covers planning, hydraulic engineering measures, land acquisition, own personnel and material contributions, as well as education and public relations work. Pure pathway construction without project relevance, acquisition of machinery for watercourse maintenance, or tourism management measures are not eligible for funding. The funding rate ranges from 40–80% of eligible expenses (25–70% for companies). Minimum thresholds are €12,500 for municipalities, €2,000 outside municipal areas, and €5,000 for land acquisition.

Applications must be registered on time via the urgency notification by October 31 of the previous year and submitted complete by January 15 of the following year. Prerequisites include a water law permit or preliminary approval, continuous coordination with the Arnsberg District Government from the concept phase, a written application according to Template 1 in duplicate, as well as a data protection declaration. Evaluation criteria include ecological contribution, cost-effectiveness, economy, and prioritization by the District Government. After approval, Template 2 allows for fund disbursement, while Template 3 governs the final proof of use. The funding measure is accompanied by professional exchange with the Arnsberg District Government until the final report.
