Description

The focus of this state initiative is on environmental, nature, and climate protection as well as energy efficiency: it supports private measures for the storage and use of rainwater in Styria. In the districts of Deutschlandsberg, Graz-Umgebung, Hartberg-Fürstenfeld, Leibnitz, Südoststeiermark, Voitsberg, and Weiz, private owners have been able to install cisterns with a storage capacity of at least five cubic meters indefinitely since January 1, 2024, thereby enabling garden irrigation and other uses independent of conventional drinking water sources. A one-time grant of up to 1,000 euros is available per system; funding for multiple cisterns per applicant is not provided. The measure contributes to conserving water resources, balancing supply peaks, and reducing climatic risks caused by dry periods.

Only new installations of the containers, including all material and installation costs, are eligible for funding. Costs for modifying existing systems, distribution technology such as pumps or pipes, as well as own labor, are not considered. Applications are submitted via the participating municipalities, which confirm the proper installation and consolidate the submitted project data. Key award criteria are compliance with technical requirements, the required storage volume of five cubic meters, and location within the defined project area. For proof of funding, detailed company invoices, payment receipts, and confirmation of proper installation must be submitted. The flat-rate funding is paid out after signing a funding agreement either through the respective municipality or directly to the funding applicants by the end of the year. The application period runs from January 1, 2024, until further notice, providing planning security for sustainably oriented owners.
