Description
The Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ) at the Bruchhauser Steine Foundation in North Rhine-Westphalia offers young people aged from school graduation up to 27 the opportunity to actively contribute to nature and environmental protection for one year. Participants support a dedicated team in maintaining the National Natural Monument Bruchhauser Steine, guide visitors through the information center, and enrich environmental education and conservation projects. The varied tasks include landscape maintenance, clearing hiking trails, monitoring nesting boxes, accompanying school classes and international guests, as well as minor office and communication duties. Through close collaboration with professionals from various disciplines, ranging from ornithologists and archaeologists to journalists, participants gain practical insights into ecological professions – all at one of the most spectacular natural sites in the Sauerland region. Career changers are warmly welcome; a driver’s license is recommended due to the remote work locations.
The funding is provided as a participation grant for private individuals; applications are accepted continuously as long as places are available. Interested parties register and submit the online application form, CV, and motivation letter via the FÖJ portal. Selection criteria include motivation and interest in environmental protection, teamwork skills, and willingness to work outdoors. The FÖJ at Bruchhauser Steine runs for 12 months and offers opportunities for independent involvement in projects, such as expanding the exhibition in the info center or improving site accessibility. This practice-oriented funding promotes not only professional skills but also personal development and a sense of responsibility for the protection of flora, fauna, and cultural heritage.
