Violence Prevention – Start Now

The music and performance project “Violence Prevention – Start Now” is aimed at students from secondary modern, intermediate, secondary, and comprehensive schools in disadvantaged districts of Dortmund and the surrounding area. Over the course of four days, international performing arts groups such as GenVerde and GenRosso work together with the youth on a music program culminating in a public concert. Educational and public institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia can apply for funding under the sponsorship program at any time, provided there is a cooperation with one of the aforementioned school types. The goal is to promote cultural education, personal development, and social cohesion—without replacing regular classroom instruction. The project offers an experiential complement to everyday school life and helps enrich local educational offerings.

Through rehearsing and performing together, participants experience the value of collaboration and mutual support. In workshops on singing, dance, and percussion, they discover individual strengths, develop teamwork skills, and strengthen their self-confidence. At the same time, the theme of non-violent coexistence gains importance by demonstrating that only collective action leads to sustainable success. The project’s lasting impact is reflected in increased motivation among the youth and a positive change in the school climate. Applications can be submitted year-round; decisions are made promptly so that schools can participate flexibly and benefit from this innovative format.
