GIGA Doctoral Program

The GIGA Doctoral Program offers a nationwide funding opportunity for outstanding social science doctoral projects and is aimed at early-career researchers with an excellent master's degree (GPA ≤ 1.5) in political science, international relations, economics, history, or related disciplines. In an internationally oriented working environment, participants benefit from individual supervision by experienced mentors as well as a comprehensive training program covering methods, science communication, and key competencies. Additionally, the program provides mobility grants for field research and conference participation, supports publications and research stays both domestically and abroad, and offers modern office equipment at GIGA. Application requirements include a high-quality project proposal with a clear connection to the GIGA research agenda and very good English skills. Selection is based on grade point average, the innovativeness of the project, and alignment with the institutional research profile.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with initial feedback usually provided within ten working days. Submission requires a completed application form, a motivation letter, curriculum vitae, research proposal (maximum 2,000 words), copies of certificates, proof of English proficiency, and a scientific writing sample. The program enables doctoral candidates to conduct independent research projects within a flexible framework, engage in interdisciplinary debates, and prepare career steps in academia and practice. Through close integration into the GIGA research structure, individual development is strategically supported, laying the foundation for a successful academic career.
